Sono giunti in finale e questa è già la loro vittoria: i tre studenti Giacomo Marciani, Marco Piu e Michele Porretta del primo anno della Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Informatica dell’università di Roma “Tor Vergata”, affiancati da Matteo Nardelli, dottorando in Computer Science, Control and Geoinformation, e dalla prof.ssa Valeria Cardellini, docente del corso di Sistemi Distribuiti e Cloud Computing, hanno guadagnato lo speech finale del Grand Challenge della decima edizione di ACM DEBS 2016 (http://www.ics.uci.edu/~debs2016/call-grand-challenge.html).

Organizzata dall’Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), una delle principali associazioni internazionali con lo scopo di divulgare e favorire la scienza, la ricerca e l’educazione informatica, DEBS è la principale conferenza internazionale che riunisce ogni anno la comunità scientifica che studia i sistemi distribuiti basati su eventi. Negli ultimi anni tali sistemi stanno acquisendo un notevole interesse grazie all’avvento dei Big Data. All’interno della conferenza DEBS, gli organizzatori hanno istituito un “Grand Challenge”, a oggi alla sesta edizione, che invita i ricercatori di università e industrie a risolvere una problematica reale sfruttando le potenzialità dei sistemi distribuiti basati su eventi.

Quest’anno il Grand Challenge ha presentato una sfida che riguarda i social network: l’analisi in tempo reale di una rete sociale in continua evoluzione per determinare la classifica degli utenti e dei post che scatenano la maggior parte di attività sulla rete e identificare le più grandi comunità di utenti coinvolte nella discussione di uno stesso argomento. Questa sfida introduce diverse difficoltà, che spaziano dalla necessità di analizzare efficientemente circa 56 milioni di dati, alla necessità di assecondare le dinamiche delle reti sociali che evolvono nel tempo, fino alla necessità di fornire risposte in tempo reale.

I ragazzi hanno progettato e realizzato una soluzione del Grand Challenge utilizzando un prodotto open source (Apache Flink). I dati reali su cui il gruppo ha lavorato sono stati forniti in modo ‘anonimizzato’ dagli organizzatori del Challenge. “È stata la prima volta che gli studenti del primo anno della magistrale si sono confrontati con la scrittura di quel genere di applicazioni – ha tenuto a sottolineare la prof. Valeria Cardellini -– La soluzione, installata su una macchina virtuale, è stata sottoposta alla valutazione della commissione esaminatrice del Grand Challenge, che ha individuato le soluzioni migliori sulla base delle prestazioni, ossia del tempo necessario per elaborare i 56 milioni di eventi e fornire i risultati richiesti in tempo reale”.

La partecipazione al Grand Challenge di DEBS 2016 è stato proposto dalla prof.ssa Valeria Cardellini come progetto del corso di Sistemi distribuiti e Cloud Computing: “Tutto è cominciato nel dicembre 2015 – racconta la prof. Cardellini – quando ho proposto agli studenti una sfida importante e ‘reale’ per approfondire i temi trattati nel corso. A questo tipo di evento di solito non partecipano studenti, ma essenzialmente gli ‘addetti ai lavori’, ovvero ricercatori di università e aziende che realizzano sistemi distribuiti basati su eventi”.

I ragazzi in questo modo hanno già ottenuto la loro prima pubblicazione scientifica: la loro soluzione sarà pubblicata negli atti del convegno come articolo di quattro pagine. La loro prossima sfida sarà alla fine di giugno a Irvine, in California, quando presenteranno la loro soluzione durante la conferenza finale del progetto.

Nota bene: nell’a.a. 2016/2017 partirà l’indirizzo “Data Science Engineering” all’interno della Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Informatica e formerà, a detta della prof. Cardellini, “i futuri ingegneri informatici in grado di proporre soluzioni innovative, efficaci ed efficienti per conservare, analizzare, filtrare e combinare i Big Data, per estrarre da essi informazioni utili ad aumentare il livello di consapevolezza e la qualità delle decisioni prese”.
